WORKING HARD FOR SUCCESS
“Success is simply a matter of luck. Ask any failure.” – Earl
In auto-biographical books you may see the words “I am often told how lucky I am to be so successful; but I always reply: ‘No, I haven’t been lucky, I have worked very hard for my success! The harder I worked, the ‘luckier’ I became!’”
It depends how committed you are at having the outcome you desire. If you are willing to work full out, give of your best, not only in the times when you feel energized and alive, but also when you feel despondent and half dead; then you will be giving yourself every chance to succeed.
I was once becoming a little despondent myself, I didn’t seem to be getting any where particularly fast and a friend said to me “Andrew, don’t worry – Rome wasn’t built in a day!” I immediately thought to myself, “No, it wasn’t, but Rome was built!” I took and still take great comfort in the knowledge, that however big the projects that I take on. They can be achieved, as long as I decide to never give up.
Tenacity, determination and that “never give up attitude” are not the hallmarks of failures! Luck, if there is such a thing, comes to us when our actions prove how deserving we are of it! So each day keep taking simple steps towards your intended success and keep in mind that those who fail will always have excuses that satisfy themselves why it is they aren’t successful.
“I know the price of success: dedication, hard work and an
unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” –
Frank Lloyd Wright
Do you really want your life to count? In the long annals of human history, maybe your name won’t even appear as a footnote, but it is still possible for you to play an important part in the evolution of human society. In that much do you want to be successful, to leave behind a legacy that counts?
I don’t think that I would have heard the name Frank Lloyd Wright or bothered to find out about him, unless I’d heard the Simon and Garfunkle song whose title is his name. Nevertheless, whether I’d heard of him or not, wouldn’t have changed the impact he had on the world of architecture or the shape of 20th Century buildings.
Frank had a passion for his work; he became dedicated to changing
the landscape of our cities in putting his ideas forward. His hard work and unremitting devotion has left its imprint on our world and has inspired architects who came after him to make their own contribution to our world.
You may have no interest in architecture, buildings or the urban landscape, but you are equally able to succeed in the things you’d would like to see happen; if you will be dedicated, hard working and have an unremitting devotion to your life’s work whatever you have decided it will be!

How do you see this life
What’s come into view
How would you describe
The world as seen by you
What is the metaphor
You’d use to describe your life
Is it a game or a beach
Or a bitch and then you die
The way that you speak of life
Becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
So be careful what you call life
What do you want it to be
I suggest you think of life
In terms most positive
Whatever bad things happen
Don’t let those negatives
Continue on inside your mind
After they are past
If you do those feelings
Will most surely last
So view life as a picnic
A day out by the sea
A sun drenched blue skied happening
And then you will be free
Free to enjoy
Your time upon the Earth
Your days will then be happy
And they’ll be filled with mirth
It’s up to you to choose
No-one else is in control
You direct the feelings
That goes off inside your soul
TRIUMPH OVER YOUR PROBLEMS!
“Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems.” – Rene Descartes
Do you welcome problems when they arrive at your doorstep? Are you glad when things seem to take a lunge in the direction of the troublesome? Are you the kind of person that can see the silver lining in the clouds as they appear? Are you willing to keep digging the dirt till you find the gold? Rene Descartes was such a man!
It seems to be more than just a positive outlook that makes someone learn from their problems. It’s a heartfelt desire to learn from life, the lessons it is so willing to give you. It’s not just a cheery smile and pleasant disposition, it’s the hunger and desire to understand and to be one who has an attitude of CANI – Constant And Never-ending Improvement!
Descartes statement seems to reveal that he didn’t solve every problem that came his way, but nevertheless he learned how to deal with future problems as he dealt with the present ones whose answers didn’t escape him. Maybe you have a problem in your life right now? If you have, what are you going to do?
Are you going to roll over and play dead? Are you going to say “I don’t know what to do!” “I can’t!” or “It’s too big a problem for me!” Or with a twinkle in your eye, tenacity in your heart and a determination to not be beaten say “I will use this problem to gain more mastery over myself, my life and my circumstances!”
USE YOUR ENERGY WISELY!
“Knowledge without follow-through is worse than no knowledge.” – Henry Charles Bukowski
Do you follow through? Do you know what needs to be done and then ignore it? To ignore something is like not knowing or ignorance. Our need to grow as human beings, leads us to learning new things and then putting that new knowledge to work for us and for others. If we don’t make use of the things we learn, our time would have been better spent in taking an active interest in some information that we intended to go on and make use of. If you (or someone you know) are intending to go to university or college, it makes sense not to take the advice of someone who is passionate about a subject you are not, when deciding which course to take; if they are pushing you in the direction of you’re their subject. Make sure all your energy is being used up doing things you love to do and learning things you intend to make use of. If you are “following through” you will be successful in life and won’t appear to others as ignorant even of things you know about.
GOING THE EXTRA MILE TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS
“The only difference between a success and a failure is that the
successful person is willing to do what the failure is not
willing to do.” – J.R. Ridinger
After we consider how our desire or lack of it may be separating us from success; then we must look at our willingness to act on our desires. Desire comes before action, but desire which isn’t followed with action has the same negative result as not having any desire at all!
What has to happen before you are willing to take action? Do you need to be bullied, cajoled, encouraged or are you a self starter? Are you willing to make the effort, without having a deadline to meet or an angry boss to contend with? If you desire success and you can also motivate yourself to take immediate action, the route to your success is made so much more likely!
The difference between those who succeed and those who fail may not be a lack of willingness to take action. According to J.R. Ridinger those who fail may be willing to take some action, but it is the actions that they are not willing to take that separate them from their desired success. We need to take consistent action, both the actions we enjoy and those we don’t, to make sure of our success!
CAN YOU SEE THE DAWN IS ON IT’S WAY?
“Yes, I am a dreamer; for a dreamer is one who can find his way
by moonlight, and see the dawn before the rest of the world.” –
In the song “Imagine” John Lennon suggests that we may think that his world view put forward in his song, is that of a dreamer; and that we might think that dreamers have lost touch with reality. And yet Oscar Wilde suggests here that the truth is far from it, that in fact the dreamers are those who can walk in the darkness of a world that has yet to see the new dawn, as if the little light they have is proof enough that the dawn is coming!
Have you ever thought of yourself as a dreamer or been told you’re dreaming, as if that were a negative thing? Maybe it’s time to consider that the “dream” you were thinking or speaking about is a reality that is on its way?
To have the thought that something that isn’t in the physical world at this time, will be! To have that knowledge that your imagination is the way to look into the future with certainty! To become a visionary like Martin Luther King, who declared his “Dream” to the world unafraid of what people would think, say or do as a result! Surely living like this, to live in the light of what you can see and being willing to speak of that light, must be so much better than being fearful of the present and uncertain and negative about the future?
John Lennon ended his “You may say that I’m a dreamer!” line with the words “But I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join us, then the world can live as one!” I think you may have gathered I’m a dreamer, but what about you?

You know what to do, but you don’t do it
The path ahead is clear
But when will you actively pursue it
And face up to all your fears
The fear of rejection is crippling you
Just ignore it and you will be
Ready for all that you should do
In fact you’ll be finally free
Free to be the person you intended to be
The one you knew all along
Was willing to step out onto the world stage
And see just where it is you belong
Procrastination is the thief of time
And your life is ebbing away
If you had a marble for each week of your life
How many are left on your tray
Take action now; don’t rob the world of your gifts
Make sure you are ready to give
All of your love, and let your focus shift
To bring joy to others, then you’ll live
HOW TO DWARF YOUR PROBLEMS
“Each problem has hidden in it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity.” – Joseph Sugarman
Did you know that the inventor of the “post-it” note Art Fry, was following up on an experiment of his 3M colleague Spencer Silver whose experiment to find a substance that was more binding than super-glue, had failed? Although the initial experiment failed a most useful application of the substance Spencer invented was achieved by Art.
Are you one of those people who see the possibilities that surround the so called “failures” of your life? Are you someone who can see that your problems can become an opportunity for growth and more than that the beginning of an amazing triumph within your life?
In a dualistic universe, for every down there has to be an up, forever negative there has to be a positive, for every problem there has to be a solution. However, to be able to see things differently you will first have to change your thinking. The logic and reasoning that bring us to our problems is not the kind of thinking that will help us find the solution.
HOW CLOSE ARE YOUR DREAMS TO BECOMING REALITY?
“One must have strategies to execute dreams!” – Azim Premji
I am beginning to create my first online Life Coaching course. I have previously worked one on one with my clients, and although I have found this very rewarding to be able to enter into deep discussions and to be able to personally mentor people towards the achievement of their goals. I am faced with the same problem as everyone else; there are only 24 hours in a day!
Typically my life coaching sessions last a couple of hours, so if I didn’t sleep, eat or do anything else then there is a maximum 84 clients I could coach in a week. In a 40 hour working week, the more achievable figure would be 20 clients although that would give me no time to review my notes before each new coaching session began.
My dream is to reach the world, with my messages of inspiration, challenge and encouragement and to coach and mentor thousands of people. The way to touch so many lives in more than the superficial level that social media has allowed me to do is by creating my own “Handle On Life” online coaching program.
I have thought about creating such a coaching program on many previous occasions and I have spoken about it many times too. Sadly, thinking and talking about your dreams is only the first step in making your dreams come true. I read recently the formula “Imagination plus action equals miracles!”
As I read todays quotation I realised that I must be systematic in my approach to this task and with this realisation I now look forward to sharing the finished product with you as soon as possible! Why not take some time today to consider what steps you need to take to bring into reality that which you have always wanted to achieve and then we can compare notes along the way.
